Seattle U to Open 2015 at Arizona State: Seattle University softball will open the 2015 season at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State for the second straight season. On opening weekend, the Redhawks will face New Mexico, San Jose State, Western Michigan, Bradley, and UC Riverside. Over the month of February, the Redhawks will travel south for four straight weekends before returning to Seattle for UW’s Spring Classic (Mar. 6-8). SU hosts their first home games vs. Notre Dame de Namur (Mar. 11) and Texas Tech (Mar. 18) in mid-March. Seattle U will open their third WAC season in Phoenix on the home field of the 2014 Regular Season Champions, Grand Canyon, on Mar. 27-28.

Scouting New Mexico: New Mexico was picked to finish ninth in the Mountain West Conference in 2015 after the Lobos finished MWC play last year with a 7-17 record (eighth place finish). NM returns eight field players and four pitchers but lose big hitters Willow Kalinen (.414) and Naomi Tellez (.369, seven home runs). Jasmine Casados is one of the top returners, who also hit seven home runs in 2014.
Scouting San Jose State: San Jose State was picked fifth of nine in the Mountain West preseason poll after finishing 2014 with a 30-24 overall record and 13-11 league record. Last season, Jessie Hufstetler led the Spartans at the plate (.441) (also .658 slugging %, .550 ob%) and she returns for her junior campaign. In the circle, senior Allison Lang is the top returner with a 3.03 ERA, 12-5 record, and 56 strikeouts in 2014.
Scouting Western Michigan: Western Michigan finished 17-34 overall and 8-14 in Mid-American Conference play in 2014 and the Broncos were picked to finish fourth in the MAC West standings in 2015. Melissa Palmer led the team at the plate last season, averaging .345 while, in the circle, Allyson Kus averaged a team-low 3.72 ERA with a 13-20 record, 26 complete games, and four complete game shutouts. Both juniors return to the squad in 2015.
Scouting Bradley: Bradley was picked to finish fifth in the Missouri Valley Conference after finishing fourth last season before winning the MVC Tournament title. The Braves return 13 letterwinners from the 2014 team that made their second NCAA Tournament appearance. Shannon King is the top returning hitter (.302) from last season, driving in a school single season top ten 31 runs. Jaelen Hull, as a sophomore, is the most experienced returning pitcher after earning the victory in the MVC Championship game as part of to seven total wins and five complete games. In March 2013, Seattle U hosted Bradley as part of a doubleheader that marked a momentous occasion for the school - SU’s first official outdoor on-campus event under the lights after Logan Field received renovation in 2012.
Scouting UC Riverside: UC Riverside went 23-31 overall as well as 4-17 in Big West play last season led by Dionne Anderson at the plate (.386) and Alyssa Razo (3.35 ERA) in the circle. Razo returns but Anderson graduated last season, leaving Natalie Sanchez (.307) as the team’s top returning batter.

•Lindsay Davis was named WAC Freshman of the Year, as well as Second Team All-Conference. Isabella Geronimo, Lisa Maulden, and Bubba Morrow were named to the First Team while Jenny Hurst joined Davis on the Second Team.
•Davis recorded her first career complete game shutout vs. a DI opponent in game one of the DH vs. UMKC on Apr. 11. On the weekend, she pitched 11 shutout innings and 8.2 without giving up a hit.
•SU and UVU combined to set six WAC season highs in the series finale on Apr. 5 – runs scored (25), hits (29), RBI (19), doubles (9), total bases (53), and walks (11).
•The Redhawks recorded a seven-game winning streak from Feb. 15 vs. Portland State to Mar. 2 vs. Santa Clara, the team’s longest since moving to DI. Their last win streak of seven games or longer was 11 from Feb. 1-Mar. 1, 2008.
•Isabella Geronimo was named one of espnW’s Players of the Week (Feb. 24-Mar. 2) after scoring nine runs, batting .652 (15-for-23) and recording five doubles as SU went 5-0 at the Santa Clara Marriott Invite.

•Lisa Maulden represented the Redhawks on the WAC All-Tournament team

Milestone Moment: Head coach Dan Powers recorded his 250th career win in his 500th career game on Feb. 16, 2014 vs. Toledo to close out the Easton Desert Classic.
Brandi Gordon Named Assistant Coach: In July 2014, Brandi Gordon was promoted from volunteer coach to assistant coach. She worked with the Redhawks first in 2008 and returned for her second stint with the team in 2014. In 2008, Gordon worked with the team’s slap hitters, coached outfield defense, and coordinated the Redhawks’ conditioning program as the team won it’s first ever Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) title and advanced to the NCAA Division II tournament. In between times with the Redhawks, she served as a coaching assistant for the Harvard University softball team, where they claimed two Ivy League Championships and three Ivy League North Division titles in five years.
NLI’s: In November, head coach Dan Powers signed three to National Letters of Intent who will begin attending school and competing for the Redhawks starting in 2015-16. Marcella Kay (San Jose, Calif.), Kaylee Ree (Gresham, Ore.), and Haley Wymbs (San Jose, Calif.) signed NLI’s.
