Portland State took a 8-0 lead through the first three innings, adding one in the top of the first on a Aubrey Nitschelm RBI single to right field. Candice Orozco opened the second with a run on a sacrifice bunt by Celena Carrisosa before Brittany Hendrickson hit a two-RBI double to center field. PSU scored four more in the third on a trio of RBI singles.
The Redhawks scored four in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit in half, 8-4, with the first two runs coming home on a Jenny Hurst (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) two-RBI double to right field. Sara Dominguez (Santa Ynez, Calif.) drove home two more on a two-run single down the right field line.
Each team added a run in the final inning as Carrisosa scored a run on a single through the left side by Rayleen Pallan for the Vikings and Bubba Morrow (Auburn, Wash.) scored on a double to right center by Savannah Loomis (Roseville, Calif.), but each team left the bases loaded to prevent further scoring opportunities.
Breanna Timmons (Santa Maria, Calif.) led the Redhawks at the plate, batting 2-for-3. Hurst and Dominguez recorded a team-high two RBI apiece.
In the circle, Loomis suffered the loss giving up four runs on six hits, also walking and striking out one in 1 1/3 innings pitched. Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.) entered in relief allowing five runs on eight hits, also walking and striking out four in 5 2/3 innings.
Karyn Wright earned the win for Portland State, allowing four runs on six hits while walking and striking out one in 4 1/3 innings. Melissa Masters pitched two innings, giving up just one run on one hit while Meagan Hendrix walked two in 2/3 innings.
The Redhawks close the weekend at the Louisville Slugger Invitational versus Southern Utah (9 a.m.) and Weber State (11:30 am).
