SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Seattle University softball (4-7) took a significant lead early in the contest but allowed Santa Clara (3-9) to come back in the bottom of the seventh as the Broncos came away with the 5-4 win to open the Santa Clara Bronco Classic.

The Redhawks scored all four of their runs in the top of the first on an RBI single to left field by Lisa Maulden (Maple Valley, Wash.) and a two-out 3RBI double to center field from Breanna Timmons (Santa Maria, Calif.).

The Broncos scored a run in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Geenamarie Bonilla and two more in the bottom of the fourth as Jordan Newell hit a 2RBI home run to right center.

The Redhawks ahead, 4-3, Chiara Biagini would hit an RBI single to center field with two outs before Bonilla hit the walk off RBI single to left field in the next at bat to give SCU a 5-4 win.

In the circle, Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.) allowed three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out six in the five inning start. Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) entered in relief, handed the loss, giving up two runs on four hits while walking and striking out one in 1 2/3 innings pitched. Ciara Gonzales earned the win for the Broncos, striking out two in the three inning relief outing.

The Redhawks face Idaho State (12:15pm PT) and Santa Clara (4:45pm PT) on Saturday, Feb. 21 before wrapping the weekend vs. San Jose State (1:30pm PT) on Sunday, Feb. 22.
