“I was happy with our attitude to start the game,” said head coach Julie Woodward. “I like the way we problem solved at halftime and the great goals we had in the second half. I’m happy about finishing the weekend that way and heading off into two games on the road next weekend.”
The first three goals of the match also comprising the first three total shot of the match, the Redhawks and Roadrunners combined for three goals within a three minute and 44 second period starting in the sixth minute.
After CSUB’s Alex Bachman took the early lead for Bakersfield, Kelly Beck (Tacoma, Wash.) evened the tally on a penalty kick and Taylor Ritzman (Holladay, Utah) took back the lead for good on an assist by Isabelle Butterfield (Bellevue, Wash.) as SU led, 2-1, just nine minutes in.
Leading 2-1 at half, Seattle U added a third on their second penalty kick of the match, this time taken by Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah).
The Redhawks adding a final pair of goals, Natasha Howe (Mission Viejo, Calif.) bent the ball into the net from the far left side in the 69th minute before Jacqui Wallis (Lake Oswego, Ore.) struck the ball through off a previously saved shot taken by Kiana Kraft (Kent, Wash.).
Verdoia led all players on the field with five shots as the Redhawks outshot the ‘Runners, 20-3.
In goal for SU, Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) earned the win, recording one save in nearly 76 minutes of play while Aris Coover (Bellevue, Wash.) entered for the final just over 14 minutes.
CSUB’s starting keeper Tori Ornela was handed the loss, making five saves in nearly 70 minutes in the net while Megan Vina finished the game with the final 20 minutes.
Seattle U hits the road next weekend at New Mexico State on Friday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. PT and UTPA and Sunday, Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. PT.
