After struggling in the opening round, the Seattle University men’s golf team made a significant improvement during Monday’s second round, moving up into 11th place after 36 holes of the Husky Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington on the Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Club.
Joe Harvie (Orting, Wash.), playing in his first collegiate golf tournament, followed an opening round 76 (+4) with a second round score of 70 (-2), making an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole as well as consecutive birdies on the 13th and 14th holes during the afternoon round. He is currently in a tie for 19th place at 146 (+2). Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) also shot 76 (+4) in the first round, and then posted a second round total of 75 (+3) for a 36-hole total of 151 (+7), ending the day in a tie for 41st place.
Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) performed better in the afternoon round, following a 79 (+7) in the opening round with a steady 73 (+1), collecting 15 pars to go along with one birdie and two bogeys, to finish the day in a tie for 44th place at 152 (+8). Ahren Young (Renton, Wash.) ended the day in a tie for 52nd place at 153 (+9) after rounds of 76 (+4) and 77 (+5) that included a total of eight birdies, and Shane Wathanasaynee (Los Alamitos, Calif.) improved from an opening-round 80 (+8) to a second-round 76 (+4) to finish the day in a tie for 65th place at 156 (+12).
As a team, Seattle U recovered from a first-round total of 307 (+19) to a second-round score of 294 (+6), moving up into 11th place with a two-round score of 601 (+25), ahead of Saint Mary’s, Utah, Pepperdine, and Sacramento State. UCLA followed a score of 296 (+8) with a second-round total of 280 (-8) to finish the day on top by one stroke over San Diego State, with the Bruins’ Jake Knapp shooting 138 (-6) to lead Gavin Green of New Mexico by one stroke.
Over on the par-71 Cascade Course at Gold Mountain, the Husky Tournament includes three Redhawks playing as individuals. Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) is tied for 19th place after shooting rounds of 72 (+1) and 76 (+5) for a cumulative score of 148 (+6), Luka Karaula (Zapresic, Croatia) improved from a first-round 78 (+7) to a second-round 75 (+4) to end the day in a tie for 32nd place at 153 (+11), and Jaesung Choi (Surrey, B.C.) is in a tie for 35th place at 156 (+14) after rounds of 76 (+5) and 80 (+9).
The third and final round of the Husky Invitational will begin on the first hole at 7:20 a.m., with Seattle U golfers teeing off from the 10th hole starting at 7:50 a.m.
