Game 1: Seattle U 7, Santa Clara 3

After a scoreless first inning on both sides, despite the Redhawks leaving three on base to end the inning, they were able to get on the board in the top of the second to take the 3-0 lead. Jenny Hurst (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) hit a 3RBI home run with two outs to drive in Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) and Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.).

The Broncos’ Krista Jensen doubled to right center with two outs in the bottom of the second, but SU earned the final out to maintain the lead. Each team earned a hit, leaving one on base in the third, but each base runner only made it to first.

In the fourth, Brianna Guerrero (Buena Park, Calif.) drove in Geronimo and in the fifth, Karina Smyth (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Geronimo hit a pair of RBI singles to increase the Redhawk lead, 6-0.

Santa Clara got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Gianetta France scored on a Amanda Delfino ground out to the third baseman. The Broncos held the Redhawks scoreless in the top of the sixth and added two more in the bottom of the inning to cut their deficit in half, 6-3. Geenamarie Bonilla and Casandra Padilla hit RBI singles to drive in the two runs.

In the final inning, Guerrero drove in Paige Bouska (Keizer, Ore.) with a run of insurance and the Redhawks held the Broncos to a quick three-and-out to come away with the win.

Seattle U made big plays in tough situations in the contest as all seven of their runs were scored with two outs.

“Mandie [Sugita] threw a good game today and Alyssa [Reuble] closed the game to stop their rally,” said head coach Dan Powers. “Isabella [Geronimo] had a big day in the leadoff spot to get things started for us. Jenny [Hurst] and Brianna [Guerrero] continued hot hitting to keep our team rolling.”

Brianna Rios was handed the loss in the circle, giving up the first three runs on four hits while walking three and striking out two in 1 2/3 innings pitched. Jessica Turner and Ciara Gonzales also made appearances for the Broncos.

Sugita earned her first win of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out five in the 5 1/3 inning outing. Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) earned her first career save, giving up just one hit and striking out one in 1 2/3 innings.

Game 2: Seattle U 4, Boston University 1

Neither team was able to score through the first three innings, despite each team leaving two runners on base in the third.

Seattle U took a 3-0 lead in the fourth and fifth innings as Sarah Petosa (Federal Way, Wash.) hit a 2RBI single in the fourth and Hurst scored a single run in the fifth.

Each team scored a run in the sixth, as Kendra Meadows scored for the Terriers and Geronimo scored for the Redhawks and SU came away with the victory.

“We had a totally different game with Boston University than on Friday in the rain,” said Powers. “Both pitchers were dialed in early, but timely hitting by Sarah [Petosa] broke the ice. Lindsay [Davis] hit her spots and our defense made plays to keep us rolling. I’m proud of the whole team effort today.”

Lindsay Davis (Palo Cedro, Calif.) earned the win in the circle, giving up just one run on seven hits while striking out one in six innings. Reuble entered in relief, earning her second save of the day.
