Seattle University softball (3-9) heads south once again to Riverside, Calif. for the Amy S. Harrison Classic hosted by UC Riverside. After head coach Dan Powers earned his 250th win in his 500th career game on Feb. 16, the Redhawks set their sights on LMU (0-5) and UC Riverside (3-6). SU Picked to Finish Second in WAC: In a vote of the league’s six head coaches, SU was picked to finish second in the league in 2014, while New Mexico State earned the top spot. Rounding out the list were Utah Valley and Bakersfield in the middle of the pack followed by Kansas City and Grand Canyon. Isabella Geronimo and Bubba Morrow also received Preseason All-WAC honors.

Redhawks Highlighted by College Sports Madness: CSM named Mandie Sugita, Brianna Guerrero, and Bubba Morrow to their First Team All-WAC and named Isabella Geronimo to Second Team All-WAC. Lindsay Davis was named Preseason WAC Freshman of the Year while Dan Powers was named Preseason WAC Coach of the Year.

Milestone Moment: Head coach Dan Powers recorded his 250th career win in his 500th career game on Feb. 16, 2013 vs. Toledo to close out the Easton Desert Classic.

Seattle U to Host 2014 WAC Tournament: Seattle U will host the 2014 WAC Tournament on May 8-10, with all five eligible teams (Grand Canyon is in DI reclassification and thus not eligible) advancing to the tournament. Stay tuned to GoSeattleU.com for updates and details as the date nears.

Scouting LMU (0-5): LMU is looking for their first win of the season after opening their season at the Cal State Fullerton Easton I Invitational on Feb. 7-8 and facing UCLA for a single game on Feb. 16. Of note, the Lions opened the season facing No. 12 Kentucky, a game they lost, 7-1. Meghan Harman leads the Lions at the plate with a .417 batting average, also recording two runs on five hits as well as two home runs and four RBIs for 11 total bases. In the circle, Sudney Gouveia has a team-high 2.33 ERA, striking out five in 6.0 innings pitched. In the inaugural year of the West Coast Conference sponsoring softball, LMU was picked to finish third in the league prior to the start of the season.

Scouting UC Riverside (3-6): The hosting Highlanders also competed at the Kajikawa Classic to open the season and, most recently, at the Fresno State Kick Off during which they went 3-2 with wins over Bakersfield, Southern Utah, and Sacramento State. UC Riverside earned their first win of the season on Feb. 14 vs. SU’s fellow WAC foe Bakersfield, 5-3. Dionne Anderson leads the team at the plate, with a .444 average, also recording seven runs on 12 hits, one home run, and four RBIs. In the circle, Alyssa Razo has posted a squad-high 2.50 ERA, recording 23 strikeouts in 28.0 innings pitched. Prior to the start of the 2014 season, UC Riverside was picked by the league’s head coaches to finish last in the Big West Conference.
