“What a great win this was for our team,” said head coach Mark Frisby. “I’m very excited for them. Sarah Lucas and Corinne Wurden broke through and sealed the win with those last two singles victories.”
Kelli Woodman (Denver, Colo.) and Barbara Carey (Seattle, Wash.) earned the first doubles victory in the No. 1 spot with a 6-4 win over Gonzaga’s Samantha Polayes and Melanie Yates. The Bulldogs’ Katie Edwards and Isabell Klingert would even the tally at No. 3 doubles, but Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) would clinch the doubles point with a victory over Kylie Peek and Franziska Koehler at No. 2 doubles, 7-6 (8-6).
The Redhawks ahead 1-0 going into singles competition, Polayes and Edwards would gain the 2-1 lead for GU with victories at No. 1 and No .2 singles.
Carey and Lucas would then take the lead back for Seattle U, 3-2, defeating Yates and Alexandra Tallas at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
A win by Koehler at No. 5 singles tied the match at three, but the final match went to Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.), 7-5, 6-3, as she clinched the win for the Redhawks at No. 6 singles.
Seattle U looks to continue the weekend winning streak with matches vs. Idaho and Washington State in Pullman, Wash. on Saturday, Feb. 8.
