In their second year in the Western Athletic Conference, Seattle University softball has been picked to finish second in a vote of the league’s six head coaches, who could not vote for their own team. Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) and Bubba Morrow (Auburn, Wash.) also represent Seattle U on the Preseason Softball All-WAC Team.

“We are very pleased with our No. 2 preseason poll ranking,” said head coach Dan Powers.  “All the hard work and lessons learned during the transition to DI are starting to pay off.  Our team has high expectations and we look forward to the challenge of competing in the WAC this season.”

New Mexico State, who fell to the 2013 WAC Tournament Champions, San Jose State, in last year’s tournament finale, was picked to finish first in the league in 2014. They received five first place votes and 25 points, while Seattle U earned one first place vote and 19 points.

Newcomers Utah Valley and Bakersfield were picked to finish in the middle of the pack, with 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Kansas City and Grand Canyon rounded out the poll with 10 and nine points, respectively. Grand Canyon, who is in the first year of NCAA Division I reclassification, will not be eligible for postseason competition.

Geronimo and Morrow, who were named First Team All-WAC at the end of last season, represent Seattle U on the Preseason All-WAC Team in 2014.

Geronimo made an impressive impact during her freshman campaign, leading the Redhawks at the plate as well as in runs, hits, and triples. She also recorded a then-WAC leading 11-game hit streak from April 12-27. On April 13 vs. Utah State, she went 4-for-4 at the plate and was just a home run shy of the cycle.

Morrow finished second on the team in batting average during her sophomore season and led the team in home runs, RBIs, and slugging percentage. She was named GoSeattleU.com Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on Feb. 12, 2013 as the team went 4-1 at the Red Desert Classic to open the season.

College Sports Madness also named Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.), Brianna Guerrero (Buena Park, Calif.), and Morrow to their First Team All-WAC and named Geronimo to Second Team All-WAC. Lindsay Davis (Palo Cedro, Calif.) was named Preseason Freshman of the Year while Dan Powers was named Preseason Coach of the Year.

The 2014 season begins Friday, Feb. 7 with the conference season culminating in the 2014 WAC Softball Tournament, hosted by Seattle U at Logan Field at Seattle University Park on May 8-10.
