Joe Harvie, a native of Orting, Wash., and currently a senior at Orting High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Seattle University and join the Redhawk men’s golf program starting in the 2014-15 academic year, announced recently by Seattle U head golf coach Marc Chandonnet.
Harvie has been a four-year standout for the Orting Cardinals golf team, earning team MVP honors as well as league MVP recognition every year of his high school golf career. A four-time All-State honoree, he won the Tacoma Athletic Commission Athlete of the Year Award for golf in both 2011 and 2012, plus he set the school records for most tournaments won, lowest single-round score, and best scoring average.
Harvie was a member of Team Washington at the 2013 Hogan Cup competition, finishing second individually while helping his team to a second-place finish in the team contest. His father Brad played collegiate baseball at Vanderbilt University and was a member of the Canadian national team from 1983 to 1986, and his cousin Jason Zuback is a five-time world long drive golf champion.
"To say that we are excited to have Joe join our family would be an understatement,” Chandonnet said. “This young man has every one of the qualities I search for in a successful student-athlete. He will most certainly be a major part of our success the second he steps foot on campus."
The Seattle University men’s golf team has completed its fall schedule and is scheduled to start the spring season Feb. 10-11 at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah. The squad will host the Redhawk Invitational April 7-8 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash., and will conclude the year with the WAC Golf Championships May 2-4 in Las Vegas, Nev.
