Huskies Defeat Redhawks, 8-0, to Close Husky Softball Classic

The Redhawks return home to face Yale for a doubleheader on Tuesday (Mar. 12) at 2 p.m. before traveling to the Cal State Northridge Invitational next weekend.

Seattle University softball (9-14) held the No. 19 Washington Huskies scoreless to open the contest, but two late UW home runs doomed the Redhawks as they fell, 8-0, in six innings. SU was the only team on the weekend to take UW past five innings. Going 5-0 on the weekend, UW was named Tournament Champion of the Husky Softball Classic.

Neither team scoring in the first two innings, the Redhawks got one hit in the top of the first, and Washington had their first early chance to score, leaving two on base in the bottom of the inning.

Allegra Wilde (Kennewick, Wash.) opened the third inning with a double to center field, but she was the only Redhawk to get on base in the inning, as she was stranded on second.

The Huskies added three runs to take the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third as back-to-back doubles drove in Victoria Hayward. Missy Taukeiaho and Kylee Lahners scored later in the inning for UW.

Seattle U left one on base in each of the fourth and fifth innings, but was not able to drive in the runners as the score remained 3-0 going into the bottom of the fifth.

With one out, Lahners hit a 3RBI homer to left field to make the score 6-0 in favor of UW, driving in Hooch Fagaly and Dani Braun.

A quick three and out for the Redhawks in the top of the sixth, Taukeiaho hit the second home run of the game, a 2RBI home run to right field, to make the final score 8-0 in six innings. Hayward also scored on the home run.

Sarah Petosa (Federal Way, Wash.), Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.), Lisa Maulden (Maple Valley, Wash.) and Wilde all recorded one hit apiece for the Redhawks. The Huskies recorded eight total hits as a team, led by Taukeiaho with three.

In the circle, Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.) started for the Redhawks, allowing six runs on seven hits while walking four in 4 2/3 innings. Jessica Ulrich (Lewiston, Idaho) entered in relief, allowing two runs on one hit.

For the Huskies, Kaitlin Inglesby got the start and win, allowing just four hits while striking out three. Bryana Walker entered in relief, striking out two of three batters faced in one inning pitched.
