The Seattle University track and field team continued to rewrite the school record book as competition began at the Husky Classic Friday evening at the Dempsey Indoor facility at the University of Washington.
Miriam Mboya (Shoreline, Wash.), already the school-record holder in the 60 meter dash, broke a record set four years and one day previous in the 200 meter dash, finishing second in her heat with a time of 26.32 seconds, almost a quarter of a second faster than the old record. Katie Tougas (Edmonds, Wash.) also posted a time faster than the previous standard, finishing her heat in 26.53 seconds.
The school record in the men's 200 meter dash nearly fell, as Zach Stanfield (Adna, Wash.) posted a time of 22.10 seconds, just 3/100ths of a second off the current mark. Stanfield finished second in his heat and fifth overall in the event. Zachary Schlachter (Tigard, Ore.) finished his heat with a time of 22.48 seconds, Eric Patterson-Floyd (Seattle, Wash.) completed his race in 22.60 seconds, and Austin Thummel-Gravitt (Puyallup, Wash.) finished third in his heat with a time of 22.65 seconds.
Matthew McClement (Bellingham, Wash.) finished ninth in his section of the 5000 meter run with a time of 14:50.06, followed by Graham Kinzel-Grubbs (Portland, Ore.) in 13th place in 15:03.15, Jeff Baklund (Auburn, Wash.) with a time of 15:29.82, and Baxter Arguinchona (Spokane, Wash.) with a mark of 15:33.87.
Bethany Richards (Shoreline, Wash.) came close to her own school record in the weight throw, finishing seventh in her flight with a top effort of 14.67 meters (48' 1.75"). Amanda Luna (Beavercreek, Ore.) posted a best effort of 13.23 meters (43' 5") to finish fifth in her flight. In the men's weight throw, Devon Walker (Ventura, Calif.) finished seventh in his flight with a top effort of 12.86 meters (42' 2.25").
Seattle University continues its participation in the Husky Classic Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with Hannah Mittelstaedt (Maple Valley, Wash.) and Elena Smith (Seattle, Wash.) in the women's 3000 meter run. One of the highlights for the Redhawks will be Stanfield competing in the first of two invitational heats of the men's 400 meter dash, scheduled for 3:58 p.m.
