The Seattle University women's swim team celebrated its' final home meet of the year by touching the wall first in all but two events during a 147-109 win over Whitworth Saturday at the Connolly Center Pool.
"We had people swimming really well today and we had some really good swims," said head coach Craig Nisgor. "We're moving in the right direction."
Nisgor highlighted the swimming of Marina Pomar-Enders (Mill Creek, Wash.), who returned from injury to win the 500 yard freestyle from lane one with a time of 5:23.36. "It was a great way for her to finish as a senior," said Nisgor. Pomar-Enders also swam the 1,000 yard freestyle, clocking in at 11:10.46.
Karla Ruff (Seattle, Wash.) touched the wall first in two events, winning the 200 yard freestyle in 1:57.32 and nabbing the fastest time in the 400 yard individual medley at 4:37.83. She also finished second in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:26.25. Fellow senior Kevlyn Richards (Gig Harbor, Wash.) won that 200 yard breaststroke race by finishing in 2:22.49 and also finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.17. Richards also helped her relay teams nab the fastest time in the 400 yard medley relay and 400 yard freestyle relay with times of 4:02.39 and 3:38.78, respectively.
Also on the winning 400 yard medley relay team, Jane Liggett (Portland, Ore.) added two individual wins by taking the 200 yard butterfly race with a time of 2:13.18 and the 100 yard butterfly in 59.24.
Nicole Doi (Pleasanton, Calif.) won the 50 and 100 yard freestyle races with times of 25.15 and 54.18, respectively, while Melissa Randolf (Everett, Wash.) took second in the two races with marks of 25.48 and 54.51, respectively.
Bethany Gehrke (Lynwood, Wash.) won the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:37.06 and also swam the second-fasted time in the 400 yard individual medley at 4:38.83.
Caroline Van Maren (Bellevue, Wash.) took second in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.74, while Rachel Leighter (Eugene, Ore.) took third in the 100 yard backstroke by swimming two lengths of the pool in 1:02.09. Leighter was also a part of the winning 400 yard medley relay team, while Van Maren helped Tiffany Dang (Bothell, Wash.), Megan Robinson (Salt Lake City, Utah), and Stephanie Bayless (Spokane, Wash.) take second in that race with a time of 4:08.69.
The Redhawks will next travel to Colorado Springs where they will take on Air Force and North Dakota in a two-day meet that starts Friday, Jan. 18 and ends Saturday, Jan. 19.
