The Seattle University men's golf team had a strong second-round showing at Price's Give Em Five Invite, but the squad could not keep up the momentum during Saturday's third round and finished the tournament, held on the Iron Course of Butterfield Trail Golf Club in El Paso, Texas, in 10th place.
Will Holdridge (Lynden, Wash.) earned his best finish of the year, tying for 13th place with a tournament total of 217 strokes, one shot over par. Holdridge caught fire in the last two rounds of the tournament, carding scores of 2-under-par 70 and 1-under-par 71 to earn his first top 15 finish of the season.
Preston Matchett (Billings, Mont.) improved his score in all three rounds, cutting one stroke from his previous round's total as the tournament went on. He finished in a tie for 43rd with 225 strokes, nine shots over par after shooting 75 (+3) and 74 (+2) his final two rounds. Just one shot behind Matchett, Rob Seibly tied for 47th with a tournament total of 226 (+10). He carded a two-under-par 70 in the second round, but took seven shots above par in the third to finish the tournament with a 79.
David Torres (Armenia, Colombia) also had a strong second round, claiming two eagles en route to a 2-under-par 70. He followed up with 4-over-par 76 in the third round to finish with a total of 12-over-par 228 and a share of 54th place.
Rounding out the Redhawks' lineup, Colter Morton (Pocatello, Idaho) shot even-par 72 in the second round but finished the tournament with a third-round score of 87, 15 strokes above par. He ended in sole possession of 66th with a three-round total of 233, 17 strokes above par.
As a team, the Redhawks took 10th place in the tournament with a score of 885, 21 strokes above par. Fellow WAC conference member Idaho ran away with the team title with a 13-under-par 851 while the Vandals' Gordon Webb took individual honors with a score of 8-under-par 208.
With the conclusion of Price's Give Em Five Invite, the SU men's golf team heads into their winter break and has three months off before its next tournament. The Redhawks begin the spring schedule Monday, February 25 at the Snowman Getaway, held at Palm Valley Country Club in Goodyear, Ariz.
