The Seattle University men's tennis team completed its first multi-game road trip of the spring season Sunday with a 4-3 loss to Northern Colorado at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney, Wash.
The match started off with the doubles competition, where all three of the Redhawks' doubles teams hung tough with their competition from Northern Colorado. The closest doubles match came from the third position, where Eric Chalmers (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Andrew Anderson (Tacoma, Wash.) forced a tiebreaker with the Bears' Ryan Lane and Jeff Carlson. The SU duo fell in the tiebreak 7-5, however, and lost their match 8-7(7-5).
The other two doubles matches were also claimed by Northern Colorado, giving the Bears the doubles point.
Seattle U was even more competitive in the singles contests, earning their three points all in singles play. In the second singles position, Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) took down Northern Colorado's Rya Lane in straight sets, winning 6-2, 7-6(7-2).
Kyle Rapp (Encinitas, Calif.) won his first match of the season against Northern Colorado, dispatching Jordan Loughnan 8-1 at the sixth position. The fifth and sixth singles contests both played one pro set in the interest of time.
The final SU point came from three singles where Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) defeated Jeff Carlson 6-2, 7-6(12-10).
After a weekend off, the Redhawks return to action Friday, Feb. 17, when they play at Oregon and take on Portland State in Vancouver, Wash.
