The Seattle University men's tennis team played two matches for the second straight day Saturday, losing 7-0 at Gonzaga and 4-0 at Eastern Washington.
The Redhawks' day started in Spokane, Wash. where Seattle U took on the Gonzaga Bulldogs at the Spokane Racquet Club. The Redhawks fell behind quickly, losing all three doubles matches by the score of 8-3.
In the singles competition, Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) in the sixth position gave the Redhawks their best chance at a point. Bediones took the first set 5-7 in his match between the Bulldogs' Pablo Mosquera Perez, 7-5. After losing in the second set, Bediones forced a tiebreak in the third and final set, which he lost 11-9.
Andrew Anderson (Tacoma, Wash.) battled tough in the first singles spot. He took six games from the Bulldogs' Alvaro Nazal but fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
After the match with Gonzaga, the Redhawks headed south to Cheney, Wash. for a contest with Eastern Washington. Due to time constraints, the teams agreed to play first to four points and to eliminate the doubles competition from scoring consideration.
Against Eastern Washington, Anderson once again took the first singles position, facing the Eagles' Ilija Cuic. Anderson took the first set against Cuic, but Cuic came back to win the next two for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 Eastern Washington victory.
Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) also forced a third set in his match at number three singles. He gave opponent Mario Navarro the first set, but won the second 6-4 to bring about a deciding third set. After a tough-fought match, however, Malagutti fell to Navarro 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The Eagles took victories at the number two and number four singles positions as well. At two singles, James Russell took down Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) 6-4, 6-2, and Chad Henninger claimed the contest in the fourth singles position, beating Bediones 6-3, 6-4, ending the scoring competition.
The Redhawks finish their weekend Sunday, Feb. 5 with a 9:00 a.m. match with Northern Colorado at Cheney, Wash.
