The Seattle University men's tennis team played two matches today, beating the College of Idaho 7-0 and losing 4-3 at Lewis-Clark State College.
The Redhawks dominated the College of Idaho Coyotes, winning every set of every match between the two schools. Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) led the way for Seattle U, defeating Thomas McMahon 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth singles position.
Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) also breezed past their College of Idaho competition. Lynch took down Joel Hernandez 6-1, 6-0 in number five singles, and in the sixth position Bediones beat Taylor Gordon by the same score.
Eric Chalmers earned his first wins of the year against the Coyotes, teaming up with Andrew Anderson (Tacoma, Wash.) in doubles play to beat James Collet and Hernandez 8-3 as the number three doubles pair for his first. Chalmers claimed his second win by beating Collet again, 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth singles spot.
Yusuke Kanehira (Tokyo, Japan), who saw his first action of the year earlier against Lewis-Clark State, won his first match of the season against the Coyotes, beating Mark Malmstrom 6-3, 6-2.
Earlier in the day, the Redhawks took on Lewis-Clark State College and lost in a close match, 4-3. Anderson played at number one singles for the first time this season and won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3 against Ivan Krijanto.
Malagutti and Bediones also earned their first wins of the season against Lewis-Clark. Malagutti took on Benjamin Robert in the fourth singles spot and won 6-3, 6-2 while Bediones dispatched Lincoln Gay, 6-3, 6-0 in number six singles.
The Redhawks will again play two matches tomorrow Feb. 5. They start the day with a match at Gonzaga at 12:00 p.m. and end the day in Cheney, Wash., for a match at Eastern Washington.
