The Seattle University men's tennis team won two matches Sunday, beating Pacific University (Ore.) 8-1 and sweeping Puget Sound 9-0.
The Redhawks' day started at Amy Yee Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash. for a home meet against Pacific.
They beat the Boxers 8-1 by winning all three doubles matches for three points and took five of the six singles matches.
At number two doubles, Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) and Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) dominated Pacific's duo of Spencer Hing and Scott Kawamura 8-0. Tom Plunkett (Seattle, Wash.) and Kyle Rapp (Encinitas, Calif.) won their number three doubles match against Kolin Wong and Hector Alcayde 8-3, claiming a second point for Seattle U.
Mark Shkrebtan (Redmond, Wash.) and Simon Meske (Tacoma, Wash.) completed the doubles sweep by taking down the Boxers' top duo of Troy Zuroske and Giancarlo Battaglia. The Seattle U team found themselves down 1-4 after five points, but fought back and won seven of the next nine points to take the pro-set match 8-6.
At number three singles, Meske again faced Battaglia and again came out ahead, taking the match 6-2, 6-1. Bediones, in the sixth singles position, defeated Scott Kawamura of Pacific by the same score, 6-2, 6-1.
The most tightly-contested match of the day came at number one singles where Shkrebtan and Pacific's Zuroske faced off again. Zuroske took the first set 4-6, but Shkrebtan roared back with a 6-2 second-set victory to force a tiebreak. Shkrebtan took the tiebreak 10-7 and claimed one point for the Redhawks.
Immediately after the match versus Pacific, Seattle U traveled down I-5 to Tacoma, Wash., to face off against Puget Sound. The Redhawks took down the Loggers 9-0, winning every set contested between the two teams.
At number three singles, Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) easily dispatched George Murphy of UPS 6-1, 6-0 for his second singles win of the day. He dominated Brandon Schlack of Pacific 6-0, 6-3 earlier in the day.
Yusuke Kanehira (Tokyo, Japan) also won two matches Sunday, beating Abe Noyes of Puget Sound 6-4, 6-3 at number three singles after vanquishing Pacific's Eric Furuya 6-2, 6-2 earlier in the day.
Eric Chalmers (Phoenix, Ariz.) won his second singles match of the year, beating the Loggers' Michael Tieu 6-1, 6-2 at number six singles.
The Redhawks next take the court in less than two weeks when they travel to Utah for three matches. The road trip begins Thursday, March 1 with a match at the University of Utah at 4:00 p.m. Friday March 2, they play at Weber State at 10:00 a.m., and end the trip with a 9:00 a.m. showdown at Utah State.
