Erik Barkhaus (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) broke his own school record in the 5000 meter run to highlight Seattle University's first day of participation in the Flotrack Husky Classic Friday night at Dempsey Indoor.

Barkhaus won his section of the 5000 meter run with a time of 14:42.52, outkicking Isaiah Bragg of Air Force to win the race by 6/100ths of a second. Barkhaus finished the race almost six seconds faster than he did in the same event at the same meet last year. Matthew McClement (Bellingham, Wash.) also posted a solid time, finishing sixth in the same section with a time of 14:55.72.

Graham Kinzel-Grubbs (Portland, Ore.) finished the 5000 meter run in a time of 15:21.67, followed by Baxter Arguinchona (Spokane, Wash.) with a time of 15:29.98. On the women's side, Hannah Mittelstaedt (Maple Valley, Wash.) finished 10th in her section of the 5000 meter run, posting a time of 18:08.35.

In the women's 200 meter dash, Miriam Mboya (Shoreline, Wash.) posted a time of 26.82 seconds, while Alyssa Lout (Tempe, Ariz.) crossed the finish line with a time of 27.09 seconds. Duncan MacKay (Renton, Wash.) competed in the men's 200 meter dash, posting a time of 22.95 seconds. Running unattached, Zach Stanfield (Adna, Wash.) finished second in his heat and 11th overall with a time of 22.18 seconds.

"What a great way to kick off the weekend," Seattle U head coach Trisha Steidl said. "A lot of personal bests, many of them significantly better, and a new school record to go along with a nail biter of a win for Erik. This bodes well for the next two days and should bring confidence to those yet to compete."

Seattle University will continue participation in the Husky Classic Saturday, Feb. 11, beginning with the one mile run at 8:30 a.m. and also including the long jump, 400 meter dash, weight throw, 800 meter run, 60 meter dash, and the shot put.
