The Seattle University women's tennis team wrapped up their first weekend of the spring season with a tough 4-3 loss at Gonzaga Sunday.
"In all of my years of coaching, that was probably the hardest-fought match I've seen," said Seattle U tennis coach Mark Frisby. "I'm incredibly proud of the girls for playing tough, even though we lost."
The Redhawks picked up where they left off Saturday night, winning the doubles point with two doubles victories. At the number one spot, Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) and partner Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) defeated Gonzaga's Prue Teitzel and Kristina Zauere, 8-6. In the third position, Nicole Nakaoka (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) took down GU's Sophie Lantta and Madeline Parker, 8-4.
SU's Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) and Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) nearly made it a doubles sweep, forcing a tiebreaker before falling to the Bulldogs' Katie Edwards and Kylie Peek, 8-7 (7-4).
The Bulldogs, however, came back and won the match in singles play. Gonzaga won three of the first four singles matches while Newman was the lone early winner for Seattle U. Playing in the third singles position, she again dispatched Zauere, this time in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
Both Alexandra Farrar and Schwab forced their singles matches to three sets. Farrar won the first set at the number one singles spot, but eventually fell to Gonzaga's Teitzel, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. After losing the first set in her match, Schwab won the second set to tie the number two singles match, but fell to Gonzaga's Katie Edwards, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The overall match was not decided until the number five singles spot, where Wurden put up a tough fight against Gonzaga's Sophie Lantta, but fell in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. Seattle U salvaged one more point thanks to Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) at the number six singles spot. Lucas won a three-set duel with the Bulldogs' Britta Stime, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
The Redhawks (3-3) return to the road again next weekend, playing Weber State, Boise State, and Idaho State in southern Idaho. They begin the weekend on Friday, Feb. 3, with a 1:00 p.m. neutral-site contest with Weber State in Boise, Idaho.
