All three Seattle University doubles teams were able to advance into the second round Saturday at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals, hosted by the University of Washington at the Nordstrom Tennis Center and the Seattle Tennis Club.
Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) and Yusuke Kanehira (Tokyo, Japan) defeated Josh Albert and Chris Aria of UC Davis, 8-5, while Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) and Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) defeated Zhia Hwa Chong and Vladimir Mijatovic of Gonzaga, 8-3. The duo of seniors Simon Meske (Tacoma, Wash.) and Mark Shkrebtan (Redmond, Wash.) received a bye into the second round.
However, the run for these doubles teams would end in the second round at the hands of three Pac-12 opponents. Malagutti and Kanehira lost to Emmett Egger and Kyle McMorrow of Washington (8-2), Meske and Shkrebtan fell to Matt Kandath and Denis Lin of Stanford (8-5), and Bediones and Lynch lost to John Morrissey and Ryan Thacher of Stanford (8-1).
In the first round of consolation singles, Lynch lost to Doug Mayeda of Oregon in straight sets (6-1, 6-0), while Kanehira fell to Hugo Verdi-Fortin, also in straight sets (6-0, 6-4). Two Redhawk players received byes into the third round of the consolation bracket, and Shkrebtan stayed alive with a super-tiebreaker victory over Joakim Norstrom of Saint Mary's (6-4, 1-6, 10-6). Just like in his first round match Friday, Malagutti won the first set before Eastern Washington's Kyle Koetje came back for a super-tiebreaker victory (4-6, 6-3, 10-8).
Shkrebtan is the lone Seattle U player still alive in any of the draws, and he will look to advance further in the consolation bracket Sunday.
