Senior Cristin Richards (Tumwater, Wash.), named to the All-Tournament Team, led the Redhawk offense in both matches, collecting 21 kills against Hofstra and 17 kills against UC Davis, plus she earned 18 defensive digs in the two contests combined. Kaytlyn Dill (Bothell, Wash.) collected 12 kills, 11 digs, and three service aces in the morning before contributing nine kills and five digs in the evening match.
Seattle U setter Megan Augustavo (Shoreline, Wash.) finished the day with 87 assists and 21 digs in the two matches, while Allie Hoskins (Colorado Springs, Colo.) followed a 21-dig performance against Hofstra with 14 digs against UC Davis. Both Karina Miastkowska (Northbrook, Ill.) and Allison Farley (Happy Valley, Ore.) were credited with five total blocks in each match, and Lani Beadle (Seattle, Wash.) helped the defense with 12 digs in the morning and nine more digs in the evening.
In the first set against Hofstra, Seattle U led 12-10 before the Pride went on a 10-2 run to pull ahead, 20-14. The Redhawks scored the next four points to pull within two, but Hofstra held them off, closing out the set with a kill by Anissa Whitney. Seattle U jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set and kept a comfortable margin throughout the set, tying the match heading into the intermission.
Hofstra (9-6) jumped on top in the third set, 8-3, before Seattle U went on a 7-2 scoring run to tie the set at 11-11. An 8-2 scoring run gave the Redhawks a 19-16 advantage, but Hofstra closed out the set with a 9-2 run of its own to take the 2-1 match lead. Seattle U was ahead in the fourth set, 8-4, but the Pride responded with a 10-3 run to pull ahead, 14-11. After the Redhawks took a 20-17 lead, Hofstra's Nikki Kinnier took over, collecting five kills as the Pride ended the set and the match on an 8-1 scoring run.
"We battled well, but fell just short, losing some crucial points," head coach Shannon Ellis said after the Hofstra match. "Lani played some good defense early to bring the momentum our way. We lost a couple points at the net at the end."
Kinnier finished the match with 16 kills, as did Kelsie Wills, who also earned 13 digs. Taylor Moore earned 12 kills and four total blocks for the Pride, Catalina Charry dished out 46 assists, and Kylee Maneja led all players with 27 defensive digs.
UC Davis (14-1) used four straight blocks by Betsy Sedlak and Devon Damelio to start a 9-2 scoring run for a 12-7 lead in the first set. Seattle U responded with its own 10-3 run to go ahead, 17-15, before the Aggies came back and tied the set. Katie Quinn helped clinch the first set for UC Davis with a block assist and a kill. The second set was close until the Redhawks scored four of the final five points, capped by a service ace from Jordan Keller (Mukilteo, Wash.).
The Aggies took an early 6-2 lead in the third set, but a Redhawk comeback capped by kills from Miastkowska and Dill tied the set at 11-11. A 5-0 Aggie run was answered by a 4-0 Redhawk run, but UC Davis closed out the set by outscoring Seattle U, 9-2, with kills by Allison Whitson and Sedlak clinching it for the Aggies. UC Davis controlled the fourth set, racing out to a 14-4 advantage and cruising to the set and match victory.
Whitson led the offense with 17 kills to go along with 10 digs, while Katie Denny contributed 15 kills and five block assists. Damelio played a solid all-around match with six assists, five service aces, eight defensive digs, and eight total blocks, and Jenny Woolway dished out 46 assists plus earned seven digs in the contest.
Seattle University (3-12) will have close to two weeks off before hosting Trinity Western in an exhibition match Thursday, Sept. 29, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Connolly Center North Court. The Redhawks will then play seven straight road matches, starting at Boise State Tuesday, Oct. 4.
