In the first evening of competition at the Husky Classic at Dempsey Indoor, junior Erik Barkhaus (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) shattered the school record in the 5000 meter run.
"Barkhaus has been working hard this season so it was nice to see his dedication come to fruition tonight," said head coach Trisha Steidl.
Barkhaus’ new time, also an overall personal record, was a finish in 14:48.27, smashing the previous record of 15:17.29. In addition to his performance, Hans Heitzinger (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished in 15:24.90, and Michael Van Nuland (Newcastle, Wash.) was right behind him with a time of 15:28.13.
Celeste Cassidy (Bellingham, Wash.), Jennifer Stolle (Seattle, Wash.), Mary Thompson (Simi Valley, Calif.), and Noelle Marchesini (Gig Harbor, Wash.) ran in the distance medley relay and placed sixth with a time of 12:39.57.
The Classic continues tomorrow, beginning with the 3000m run at 8 a.m. and the high jump at 9 a.m.
