The Seattle University men's golf team made a significant improvement from the second round to Tuesday's third round, posting a score of 296 in the final round to finish fifth in the team standings at the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational at the Monarch Dunes Golf Club.

Ian Dahl (Longview, Wash.) was Seattle U's top finisher, shooting 76 to finish in a tie for 13th place with a cumulative score of 220 (+7). Dahl finished tied for fourth among all golfers in par-3 scoring at even par. Preston Matchett (Billings, Mont.), tied for first in par-5 scoring at four under par, shot 75 in the third round to finish the tournament in a tie for 20th place at 223 (+10).

Paul Pavlos (Woodinville, Wash.) duplicated his first-round score of 74 Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 26th place with a final total of 226 (+13). Chris Holway (Longview, Wash.) shot the Redhawks' best round of the day, earning an eagle on his way to a 71 and a three-round total of 229 (+16), good enough for a tie for 31st place. Rob Seibly (Spokane, Wash.) shot 80 in the final round and finished in 37th place with a final score of 233 (+20).

As a team, Seattle University's score of 296 (+12) enabled the team to post a final total of 893 (+41), seven strokes ahead of North Dakota and just two strokes behind Cal State Fullerton. The Cal Poly gold team won the tournament by two strokes over the other Cal Poly squad that was entered, while UCLA's Mario Clemens shot 67 (-4) in the final round to earn the individual title by four strokes over Alex Robb of North Dakota.

The Seattle University men's golf team will take the next couple of weeks to prepare for the final tournament of the fall season, the Kauai Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii Sunday and Monday, Oct. 24-25.
