Sarah Jaeckel (Littleton, Colo.) and Allison Farley (Happy Valley, Ore.) each finished with eight kills, while Jamie Mellies (Henderson, Nev.) notched a double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs. Defensively, Jordan Keller (Mukilteo, Wash.) led the way at the net with five block assists, and Emily Deleissegues (Aromas, Calif.) paced the backline with 13 digs.
San Diego State (9-10) jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first set, but Richards earned three straight kills to cut into the Aztec lead. Down by eight late in the set, Seattle U went on a 6-2 run, capped by consecutive kills from Jaeckel, to come within four at 24-20, but Kyley Sexton closed out the set for San Diego State with a kill.
The Aztecs again took early control in the second set, pulling ahead 13-5 before Seattle U once again started to catch up. A block by Richards and Keller allowed the Redhawks to pull within one at 16-15, but San Diego State promptly won five of the next six points to regain a comfortable lead. The home team closed out the second set with a kill by Jessica Peacock.
The Redhawks scored the first two points of the third set, but the Aztecs went on a 5-1 run to take the early lead. A 6-1 scoring run for Seattle U pulled the visitors to within one at 17-16, and a kill by Farley brought about a 22-22 tie. After trading the next four points, San Diego State clinched the match on a kill by Raegan Shelton and a Redhawk attack error.
Shelton and Peacock each collected ten kills to lead the Aztecs, while Andrea Hannasch finished with nine kills. Johnna Fouch ran a solid offense, collecting 36 assists to go along with seven digs, and Kristi Jackels led the way for San Diego State with two service aces and 14 defensive digs.
With her five block assists, Keller set the new school record for most block assists in a single season, currently with 101. She is now just three total blocks away from that single-season record of 107 set by Lizzy Safranski in 2004. Also, Richards moved into sixth place on the single-season kills list and is just three kills behind the fifth-place total of 354 kills she earned last season.
Seattle University (9-12) returns home to face the Montana State Bobcats Sunday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Connolly Center North Court. After the match, seniors Janet Beckerman (Bellevue, Wash.), Deleissegues, and Mellies will be honored for their four years of contributions to the volleyball program.
