Ian Dahl (Longview, Wash.) led the way for the Seattle University men's golf team on the first day of the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational, currently sitting in a tie for fourth place in the individual standings as the Redhawks occupy the same position in the team standings after two rounds at the Monarch Dunes Golf Club.

Dahl opened with a 68 to finish the opening round in second place in the individual standings. The junior slipped a little bit during the second circuit of the par-71 course, shooting 76 to finish the day in a tie for fourth place at 144 (+2), four strokes behind co-leaders Mario Clemens of UCLA and Alex Robb of North Dakota and just one stroke behind Pace Johnson of Cal Poly.

Preston Matchett (Billings, Mont.) also found himself in the top 20 after the first day, posting rounds of 72 and 76 to finish the day in a tie for 15th place at 148 (+6). Paul Pavlos (Woodinville, Wash.) is in a tie for 30th place after shooting rounds of 74 and 78 for a cumulative score of 152 (+10), Rob Seibly (Spokane, Wash.) finds himself in a tie for 32nd place with a two-round total of 153 (+11) after rounds of 74 and 79, and Chris Holway (Longview, Wash.) shot rounds of 78 and 80 for a opening-day score of 158 (+16), good enough for a tie for 41st place.

As a team, Seattle University combined to post an opening-round score of 288, putting the Redhawks in a tie for third place after the opening 18 holes. Seattle U shot 309 in the second round to finish the day tied with Cal State Fullerton and North Dakota with a cumulative score of 597 (+29), just two strokes behind third-place Cal State Bakersfield. Cal Poly leads the way at 581, with Cal Poly Gold in second place at 585.

Seattle University will look to advance up the leaderboard during the final 18 holes of the tournament Tuesday morning beginning at 7:40 a.m.
