David Kovas (South Bend, Ind.), a newcomer to the Seattle U program, made his way to the semifinals of the A-flight consolation bracket, first defeating Justin Guay of Portland in a deciding tiebreaker (6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (3)). Kovas then defeated Lluis Altimres of Eastern Washington, again in a deciding tiebreaker (6-2, 2-6, 1-0) before an injury forced him to withdraw from his semifinal contest.
Kovas teamed up with Jordan Prince (Hansville, Wash.) in the open doubles, first defeating Viktor Svoboda and Anders Tischer of Lewis-Clark State College, the sixth seeded team in the draw, 8-4. That was followed by a victory over Jackson Martin and Bryan Thorp of Portland, 9-7, and an 8-4 victory over fifth-seeded Fernando Mussolini and Julian Sanchez of Eastern Washington. Unfortunately, Kovas's injury forced the team to retire before taking on the top seeded duo of David Cysneiros and Carl Kuschke of Montana in the semifinals.
Also in the main doubles draw, Mark Shkretbtan (Redmond, Wash.) and Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) defeated Kevin Eischen and Pablo Perez of Gonzaga, 8-5. In the consolation doubles draw, Patrick Boorkman (Bellevue, Wash.) and Simon Meske (Tacoma, Wash.) were forced to face teammates Adam Strizich (Helena, Mont.) and Zachary Williams (Spokane, Wash.), earning a 9-7 victory.
Meske also reached the semifinals of the A-flight consolation bracket, defeating Scott Sullivan of Gonzaga (6-3, 6-4) and Ethan Vaughn of Montana (7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (7)) along the way before finally falling to Mike Hukwo of Portland. In the main singles B-flight draw, Prince earned a first round win over Jeff Lowndes of Lewis-Clark State College (6-3, 7-6 (2)), Williams defeated Muzeen Ismath of Gonzaga (6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (2)), and Bediones picked up a straight-set win over Tyler Campbell of Gonzaga (7-5, 7-5).
In the B-flight consolation bracket, Strizich defeated Cody Blum of Montana (5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (6)) and Andrew Dobbs of Idaho (6-2, 6-1) to reach the semifinals before falling to Campbell in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
The Seattle University men's tennis team is next in action at the Boise State Invitational Oct. 8-10, followed by participation in the University of Washington Invitational Nov. 5-7 before preparing for the dual match season in January.
