ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Seattle University men's basketball team spent three full days in Seattle before heading back on the road, flying into Santa Barbara Wednesday and then driving to San Luis Obispo for Thursday's game against former head coach Joe Callero and the Cal Poly Mustangs. The team drives back to Santa Barbara after Thursday night's game for an early flight Friday morning to Sacramento for Saturday afternoon's contest against UC Davis. Seattle University is looking to continue its success against the Big West, having defeated Cal Poly and UC Irvine last season on a similar road trip.
THE LAS VEGAS INVITATIONAL: Seattle University split its two games at the HoopTV Las Vegas Invitational last weekend at the Orleans Arena. Seattle University allowed Presbyterian to stay close throughout the game, but forcing 23 turnovers and pulling down 14 offensive rebounds was enough for SeattleU to win, 67-63, Friday afternoon. Charles Garcia again led the way for Seattle University with 25 points and eight rebounds. Cervante Burrell finished with nine points, four assists, and two steals, while Mike Boxley collected nine points and five rebounds. Behind 41 points from Garcia, including 25 points in the final 13:30 of the game, Seattle University was able to erase a 17-point second half deficit and take a late lead, but Wofford College hit two free throws with 12 seconds remaining and held on for an 84-83 victory last Saturday afternoon. Garcia, named to the All-Tournament Team, shot 16-of-24 from the field and 8-of-18 from the free throw line in accumulating his 41 points. The junior also pulled down 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Aaron Broussard finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Alex Jones made a solid contribution off the bench with eight points, including a key three-pointer during SeattleU's 11-1 run.
NOTABLE CAREER NUMBERS: Last season, Chris Gweth moved into the top ten for most three-pointers made in a career, currently sitting in a tie with Sam Kirby for eighth place with 118 three-pointers. Gweth is also sixth on the all-time list for three-point field-goal percentage, hitting 40.0 percent of his long distance shots over the past three-plus seasons. Gweth is tenth on the school's all-time steals list with 117 career thefts. Mike Boxley is close to advancing into the top ten, coming into the weekend with 113 steals during his Redhawk career. With 171 more points this season, Gweth would become the 34th player in Seattle University men's basketball history to reach 1,000 points for a career.
