The Seattle University volleyball team held a lead at the beginning of each set, but was unable to hold off Cal Poly, as the Mustangs picked up a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-16, 25-18) Friday morning in the first match of the Mission Inn of Pismo Beach Invitational at Mott Gym.

Janet Beckerman (Bellevue, Wash.) led Seattle University with seven kills and three blocks, while Cristin Richards (Olympia, Wash.) and Kaytlyn Dill (Bothell, Wash.) also finished with seven kills each. Richards also collected six digs, as did Emily Deleissegues (Aromas, Calif.). Kelly Biette (Brighton, Colo.) contributed five kills and three block assists, and Jamie Mellies (Henderson, Nev.) dished out 22 assists.

Seattle University took the early lead, maintaining a four-point advantage during the first half of the opening set. Down 14-10, Cal Poly outscored SeattleU, 11-2, to take a 21-16 lead. The two teams traded points the rest of the way, with Catie Smith notching a kill to clinch the first set for the Mustangs.

In the second set, Seattle University scored five of the first six points, but Cal Poly responded, going on a 6-1 run of its own to jump on top, 7-6. A block by Biette and Beckerman cut the Mustang lead to 12-10, but the home team rattled off five unanswered points to take control of the set.

Once again, SeattleU held the early lead in the third set, scoring the first three points thanks to Cal Poly attack errors. The Mustangs again rallied back, taking the lead at 10-9 on a SeattleU attack error. Down 16-11, the Redhawks scored five unanswered points to tie the set at 16-16, but a kill by Holly Franks started a 9-2 run that ended the match in Cal Poly's favor.

Cal Poly (3-8) was led by Franks with ten kills and Dominique Olowolafe, who earned nine kills, a .412 hitting percentage, two service aces, and four block assists. Smith and Molly Pon each finished with eight kills, Megan McConnell contributed six kills and six total blocks, and Alison Mort led the Mustangs in the back with 13 defensive digs.

Seattle University (3-9) continues play in the Mission Inn of Pismo Beach Invitational later Friday, facing UC Santa Barbara beginning at 5 p.m. After concluding the weekend with a match against Santa Clara Saturday, Sept. 19, at 4:30 p.m., the Redhawks return to the Connolly Center for their first home match in 24 days, welcoming North Dakota to the North Court Tuesday, Sept. 22, for a 7 p.m. contest.
