Members of the Seattle University men's basketball team joined Rudy the Redhawk at Bailey Gatzert Elementary School in Seattle on Wednesday, March 11, to interact with the students about the importance of good math skills.

Seattle University and the YMCA Community Learning Center co-sponsored a program called Math Madness, a competition based on the NCAA Basketball Tournament. The students were divided into four teams: Gonzaga, Duke, North Carolina, and UCLA, The objective of the program was to improve the mathematical skills of the Bailey Gatzert students through the use of the Everyday Math curriculum supplmental games and activities.

The finale of the program involved SeattleU players Austen Powers, Shaun Burl, Taylor Olson, and Aaron Broussard, along with Rudy, leading the young students in basketball drills such as dribbling and passing. The players also gave away SeattleU basketball prizes such as jerseys and basketballs in a drawing.

This is one of many community service projects that the Seattle University athletics department is involved in throughout the year, fulfilling the mission of the school that deals with forming leaders for a just and humane world.
