Cal State LA Wins Shootout, 4-2, After Two Teams Play To A Scoreless Tie

Sunday afternoon at Championship Field, for the second consecutive NCAA match, the sixth seed Cal State LA Golden Eagles played to a 0-0 tie, this time taking the second seed Seattle University Redhawks to a shootout, which the Golden Eagles won 4-2 to eliminate Seattle University and advance to the Far West Region final of the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Tournament.

Khadija Greenwood led off the shootout for Cal State LA, but her shot was stopped by goalie Kaitlyn Jackson (Kent, Wash.). However, could not take advantage, as Maryann Boddy’s (Bellevue, Wash.) shot went wide. Each team scored in the next two rounds, with the Golden Eagles also converting in the fourth round. M'ily Reiter’s (Billings, Mont.) shot hit the post and bounced towards Cal State LA goalie Reyna Coca, who seemingly saved the ball from going over the goal line. Liz Franco clinched the victory for Cal State LA in the fifth round.

dominated the action for most of the afternoon, outshooting Cal State LA 18-7. Both Jasmine Wilson (SeaTac, Wash.) and Leah Wymer (Bothell, Wash.) had solid attempts early in the first half that were turned away by Coca. Late in the first half, a ball was played into the box that Wymer tipped towards Maria Madeira (Canby, Ore.), who attempted to flick a shot into the net, but Coca again made the save.

In the second half, Boddy had two solid chances that just went wide. Cal State LA used the wind to its advantage, taking control of the match late in the second half. Franco took back-to-back shots, but one was blocked and the other sailed wide. Nothing happened in the first overtime, but threatened to end the match in the second extra period, as Boddy took a shot that was saved by Coca, followed by an attempt by Wymer that floated over the goalie’s head but hit the crossbar and bounced away.

finishes the 2007 season with a 17-3-1 record, including a 12-2 record in the GNAC. Meanwhile, Cal State LA (13-5-4) comes back to Seattle next weekend for the regional final, as the Golden Eagles face Seattle Pacific next Thursday, Nov. 15, beginning at 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium.
