The men’s soccer team improved to 5-1 with a 1-0 shutout of Notre Dame de Namur Sunday at Championship Field. battled through a scoreless first half before finally breaking through with a goal in the 62nd minute.
Cameron Mertens (, ) finished a breakaway on a ball over the top from John Fishbaugher () for the only goal of the game. The goal was Mertens’ second of the season as well as his second consecutive game-winning goal. The assist was the second of the year for Fishbaugher, who also had two shots in the game.
Emerson DeOliveira () earned his second shutout of the season and improved to 3-1 in goal. He recorded two saves in the second half to keep a zero on the scoreboard for the visiting team.
seemed to be in control most of the match, but could not find the back of the net until Mertens goal. Jason Cascio () had four shots, two of which were on goal.
Sheldon Steenhuis played in goal for Notre Dame de Namur and recorded four saves. His first half save on Cascio kept the match tied going to halftime.
now heads back on the road for two matches to start the conference season. They travel to Montana State Billings on Friday, Sept. 14, at 2:30 p.m. and then to on Monday, Sept. 17, at 7:00 p.m. They return home to Championship Field on Monday, Sept. 24, at 2:30 p.m., to face Montana State Billings.
