SEATTLE - With the game on the line and Seattle University making a run, Saint Martin's showed why it is ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division II West Region as it pulled away to a 61-45 win over the Redhawks at the Connolly Center on Saturday.
After a nip-and-tuck first half, Saint Martin's (17-6, 11-3 GNAC) had pulled out to what appeared to be a comfortable 39-25 lead midway through the second half. But Seattle (9-15, 4-11 GNAC) fired back with an 18-6 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead to 45-43 thanks to a trio of 3-pointers from Jenny Iverson.
But when push came to shove, the Saints proved they deserved their No. 6 ranking by outscoring the Redhawks 16-2 in the final 6:31 of the game to pull away for the win.
Seattle was led in scoring by seniors Kristin Connolly and Thresia Busch, each with 10 points. Busch also had team highs in rebounds with six and assists with four. Iverson finished the game with nine points on her three long-range shots, while Amanda Kerr scored six points.
Saint Martin's Martina Kartikova and Julia Eisentrout each scored 14 points to lead the Saints. Kartikova had six rebounds but turned the ball over seven times. Beth Layton added 12 points while Whitney Golob scored nine points with seven rebounds.
Seattle hits the road next week and will travel across town to face Seattle Pacific on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
