SEATTLE — Seattle University women’s soccer opened conference play in dominant fashion Saturday, cruising to a 4-0 victory over San Francisco at Championship Field.
The Redhawks (7-3-2, 1-0-0) scored three times in the first half and added another goal in the second, overwhelming the Dons with a 27-6 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in shots on target.
U'i Kaaihue got Seattle U on the board just 4:29 into the match, converting a penalty kick for her sixth goal of the season. The Redhawks doubled their advantage in the 25th minute when Katie Piburn finished a chance assisted by Leila Leano.
Seattle U continued to apply pressure throughout the opening half, and Emily Sparks made it 3-0 in the 44th minute. Sparks collected a pass from Kyla Schuster and scored her first collegiate goal, giving the Redhawks a three-goal cushion at halftime.

The Redhawks kept the pressure on after the break. Schuster capped the scoring in the 71st minute, finishing a play set up by Imani Newby and Kailee Wilson.
Kaaihue, Piburn and Schuster each finished with a goal, while Sparks added a goal off the bench.
Defensively, Kassidy Kirgan made two saves across 77:39 to earn the victory and help Seattle U record its fifth shutout of the season. Rachael Remnet played the final 12:21 and made one save as the Redhawks preserved the clean sheet.
Seattle U now stands at 1-0-0 in conference play and 7-3-2 overall after a convincing start to league play. They will now look forward to a test vs the preseason conference favorites in Pepperdine, as they face the Waves in Malibu on Saturday, Oct. 3.
