SEATTLE - A day filled with a trifecta of Seattle University athletic events kicks off with the volleyball program as the Redhawks (3-7, 0-0 WCC) host I-5 rival Portland (7-2, 0-0 WCC) on Saturday, September 26 at 1 PM for their Alumni Day match.
Fan fare is set to last the duration of the day to celebrate the start of a new academic year. Following the volleyball match, students are encouraged to attend the SGSU’s BBQ ahead of both soccer matches later in the day.
The Redhawks capped off conference play with wins over Chicago State, North Dakota and Southern Utah, securing a 3-1 record at home.
Seniors Adee Butler and Teagan Melton lead the offense with 81 total kills a piece, averaging 2.45 kills per set following the non-conference. The duo are both tied-24th in the WCC in total kills on the season.
Guiding the offense is junior Grace Jones, who ranks 12th in the WCC in assists with 167 through 10 matches. Her 4.64 assists per set pace the team while fellow setter, sophomore Bella Jones, also ranks top-15 in the conference with 4.04 assists per set.
Junior Hailey McEllrath leads the Redhawks from the service line, pacing the team with 12 aces. She sits eighth in the WCC in aces per set with 0.38.
A staple piece to the Redhawk defense is sophomore Lexi Jones, who sits eighth in the conference in total blocks with 41.0. Her seven solo blocks is good for third in the WCC.
Aiding the defense is freshman Janae Demant, who leads the team with 125 digs in 10 matches. Demant averages 3.44 digs per set, a mark that ranks sixth in the WCC.
The Redhawks block is one of the best in the league, sitting third in the conference in solo blocks (22) and blocks per set (2.31). Their serve is also amongst the best in the league, as their 1.39 aces per set sits SU fifth in the conference standings.
Saturday’s meeting against Portland will be the 13th in program history dating back to the start of the series in 2008. The Pilots lead the all-time series 9-3 after taking both WCC contests a season ago. The Redhawks aim for their first win over the Pilots since 2016.
Following the weekend, the Redhawks remain at home to host a pair of matches, welcoming both San Francisco and Santa Clara to First Hill on October 1 and October 3 respectively.
