AZUSA, CALIF. — Azalea Groleau has run a lot of races in her Seattle U career.
But it wasn’t until Friday evening that she ran her first collegiate 10k, making her debut at the APU Franson Last Chance Meet, held by Azusa Pacific University.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Groleau was up to the challenge. Groleau clocked a 35:51.77, finishing in fifth place overall and earning the second-fastest time in Seattle U history.
The records book is a familiar place for Groleau’s name to appear; she already holds the school record for the women’s 5000m (16:46.75), the second-fastest 3000m (9:59.96), and the third-fastest 1500m (4:30.34) in school history. She also holds the fastest 6000m (20:28), and 5000m (17:23) in Seattle U cross country history.
Seku Sanders also had a second-place all-time finish at the APU Franson — sort of.
Sanders ran the men’s 8000m race in 1:48.83, coming within one-tenth of a second of himself for the Redhawks’ all-time record.
Last month, Sanders set the record with a 1:48.75 time at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
North of California, the Redhawks competed in two additional meets over the weekend. Four competitors represented the team at the Oregon Twilight in Eugene, Ore., on May 8, with another 14 Redhawks competing at the Portland Twilight on May 9.
In the Oregon Twilight, Zoe Tibbo set a season-best in the women’s triple jump with an 11.38m distance. Tibbo ranks sixth all-time in Seattle U’s triple jump leaderboard with an 11.56m distance.
At the Portland Twilight, PR’s fell.
Osaze Williams ran a personal-best 1:50.58 in the men’s 800m, improving almost a second from his third-fastest in school history. Jeremy Posdon also set a PR in the men’s 800m with a 1:54.45.
In the men’s 1500m, Roman Radecki paced the Redhawks with a personal-best 3:55.74, coming within one second of a top-10 time in school history. Khalid Hirsi was second on the team with a PR of 4:02.82.
On the women’s side, six competitors represented Seattle U in the 1500m.
Five of them left with PR’s.
Mila Tsai led the way with a PR of 4:42.09. Mira Danish (4:45.64), and Jordan White (4:51.64) were next, followed by Lydia Dale (4:52.10), and Peyton Basilio (4:52.49). Sierra Swart set her season best with a time of 5:00.87.
Overall, the Redhawks set 10 total PR’s over the weekend amongst just 19 competitors.
Next, the Redhawks will compete in the Stumptown Running West Coast Twilight from May 15-16 in Portland, Ore.
