GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Seattle University women's golf team has gotten hot at the right time, putting up their most dominant performance of the season in their final tournament before postseason play. The Redhawks claimed first place overall as a team at the Bobcat Desert Classic with a score of +9 over, a full three strokes ahead of second-place Montana State.
This competition was all about the freshmen for the Redhawks, with Zoe Rubichon and Blayne Brown putting up career performances to finish in the top five. Rubichon, who tied her career-low round of -3 under, 69 in the first round, eclipsed her previous career-high finish of eighth by shooting -2 under, 214 with 11 birdies to place second inidividually. Brown also set a career-best finish in this tournament, having also previously finished as high as eighth in her collegiate career. She finished in fifth place with -1 under, 215 and tied her career-low round of -3 under, 69 in the second round.
"Congratulations to our freshmen, who were very impressive this week," said head coach March Chandonnet. "This victory doesn’t happen without all five players. We battled the wind and heat today and you could tell they were feeling the pressure, so it was awesome to see them handle it so well."
Indeed, the rest of the team also put up a strong showing, most notably Tsara Ralamboarison. The senior carded +5 over, 221 and barely missed out on the top 10, finishing in 12th and helping cement the Redhawks' first-place finish with her consistent play. Fellow senior Aaryanna Morris also finished her last regular-season competition as a Redhawk with a bang, tying her season-best round of +1 over, 73 and carding +8 over, 224 for 26th place.
Rounding out the group was Jeanne Padillo, who finished in 64th with a total score of +21 over, 237, but made a necessary third-round contribution of +3 over, 75 to keep the Redhawks from having to go to a playoff hole to determine the team title.
Melissa Gilloz, who competed as an individual, placed 38th with +11 over, 227.
The Redhawks will next take action in the West Coast Conference Championship from April 25-27 at Green Valley Country Club in Fairfield, Calif. The competition will start at 7:30 a.m. on each day, and will feature eight total teams, with Seattle U competing against conference mates Gonzaga, Oregon State, Pepperdine, San Francisco, Santa Clara and Washington State along with affiliate member Augusta University.
