SEATTLE - Seattle University softball (11-10) struck first to lead its crosstown rival by two runs but the Redhawks were unable to hang on, falling to Washington (16-6) 12-3 inside Husky Softball Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Two Redhawks went for multiple hits, with senior Taylor Fitch guiding the team with two hits, including her first triple of the season, one run and one RBI. Senior Brooklyn Jones ended the day with two hits, including an RBI double.

Junior Mikee Morris and sophomore Abbie Fales each scored one run apiece, while Morris tallied a hit. Morris extended her hitting streak to eight straight games.

Junior Karen Spadafora led the defense with seven putouts, while Fitch paced the team with two assists.

Leading the team from the circle and earning the start was junior Berkley Vance. She pitched 2.0 innings and faced 12 batters while striking out one. Freshman Kaia Galaviz pitched the most innings for the Redhawks, throwing 2.1 innings. She faced 11 batters and struck out three. Junior Avari Morris pitched 1.0 inning and faced nine batters while matching Galaviz with three strikeouts.

Mikee Morris led off the day with a single to left before Fitch hammered her RBI triple, the first for Fitch this season. Senior Ava Sin reached first off a Husky error, allowing Fitch to score from third to give the Redhawks the early jump on Washington 2-0. Vance and the Redhawks orchestrated a three up, three down first inning for the Huskies to end the first frame up 2-0.

Washington responded in the bottom of the second with a run to cut the Redhawks’ lead in half before a busy inning in the third gave UW its first lead of the contest. The Redhawks got a run back in the top of fourth after Jones’ double to center scored Fales from first after she reached on a fielder’s choice. The Huskies dialed up their own RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to lead by three runs, 6-3, heading into the fifth frame.

UW scored a pair of runs in the fifth after deterring the Redhawk offense in the top of the fifth, leading 8-3 into the sixth. Morris closed the fifth with her first strikeout of the contest, getting the batter looking. Both Jones and graduate Jay Ross reached base in the top of the sixth, with Jones’ single moving Ross into scoring position, but SU could not drive in another run.

Washington loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth while Morris chipped at the jam with two strikeouts. Trailing 9-3 after a Husky was walked in, back to back singles from UW closed the door as SU fell 12-3.

Seattle U returns to action when it hosts Montana for a four game series for its home debut at Logan Field from Friday, March 6 to Sunday, March 8.
