SEATTLE – Seattle University men’s basketball seeks to string a pair of wins together for the first time in 2026 when it heads back out on the road Saturday, Feb. 7, traveling south on I5 to face the University of Portland. Tip off from the Chiles Center is scheduled for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.

QUICK HITS

  • Seattle U improved to 15-9 overall and 4-7 in West Coast Conference play with an 83-81 win over Pepperdine on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
  • The win snapped a two-game skid and moved the season record in games decided by five points or less to 4-3.
  • Junseok Yeo led the Redhawks with 18 points, including the go-ahead putback layup with 13 seconds remaining. Brayden Maldonado hit 1-of-2 free throws for the final spread.
  • Maldonado, Will Heimbrodt and Houran Dan added 13 points apiece. The 13 points was a career-high for Dan, who hit the mark in just 18 minutes of action.
  • The Redhawks are now 6-0 when scoring 80 points or more.
  • It marked just the third time they have allowed 80 points or more, and the first win while doing so.
  • After going 12-3 through their first 15 games on the season (all played in 2025), the Redhawks have now gone 3-6 since the calendar flipped to 2026.
  • Maleek Arington collected three steals against the Waves, bringing his season total to 53.
  • Will Heimbrodt had three blocks to bring his season total to 58.

ABOUT THE SERIES VS PORTLAND

  • With the all-time series dating back to the 1940s, Seattle U and Portland have a storied history as Pacific Northwest rivals.
  • Seattle U holds a 77-31 all-time record over the Pilots.
  • The teams have nine meetings in the Redhawks’ modern day Division I era, including six straight wins for Seattle U heading into this year’s first match-up.
  • The teams last met on Nov. 19, 2022 in Portland. Seattle U rallied from a six-point halftime deficit, outscoring the Pilots 44-26 in the second half, to win 80-68.
  • Cameron Tyson paced the Redhawks with 18 points in that win. Alex Schumacher had 14 points while Emeka Udenyi and Brandton Chatfield had 12 points apiece.
  • The teams met twice during the shortened 2020-21 season. They met in the delayed season opener on Nov. 25 with Seattle U claiming an 84-72 victory at the Chiles Center. Riley Grigsby poured in 28 points and Darrion Trammell added 17 points and nine assists.
  • Just over a month later on Dec. 30, the Redhawks closed out the calendar year with an 84-68 win over the Pilots at the Redhawk Center. Trammell had 25 points and 13 assists, while Grigsby (22p, 10r) and Jared Pearre (18p, 10r) each added a double-double as well.
  • Seattle U is 35-23 all-time in Portland.
  • Portland’s last win in the series was Feb. 5, 2011 in Seattle.
  • • The Pilots last win at home was Nov. 17, 2009.
  • • This marks the first conference meeting between the two schools since 1980. The schools were both West Coast Athletic Conference (now WCC) members from 1977-1980.

RECORD BOOK WATCH

  • Will Heimbrodt has 58 blocks through 24 games, leading the WCC and ranking among the nation’s best in the statistical category.
  • With seven games remaining in the regular season, Heimbrodt has moved into fourth in Seattle U’s single-season record book.
  • Currently in second is Myles Carter (2018-19) with 60 blocks.
  • Seattle U’s all-time record for blocks in a single season is 79, set by Aaron Menzies during the 2017-18 season.

NUMBERS WATCH

  • The 83-81 win over Pepperdine on Feb. 4 was No. 95 at Seattle U for Head Coach Chris Victor. He is five wins away from the century mark while leading the Redhawks. Victor is also two wins away from 200 for his career as a head coach, which also includes six seasons at Citrus College in California.
  • John Christofilis has poured in 138 threes in two-plus seasons at SU, putting him in striking distance of entering the SU all-time top-list this year. Sitting tied for 10th are Mack Junior (95-99) and Arne Klubberud (95-99), each with 144 career threes.
  • Maleek Arington enters Saturday match-up at Portland with 907 career points and eyes becoming a third member of the 2025-26 squad to surpass 1,000 career points. He would join Jojo Murphy (1,487 career points) and Brayden Maldonado (1,370 career points).
