HOUSTON, TX - Seattle U men's and women's swimming began their inaugural Big West Championships on Wednesday in Texas. The Redhawks set four new program top 10's including a shattering of the men's 800 Freestyle Relay record.
"We had a solid first night of racing," Head Coach Joe Dykstra said. "I think we had some nerves and oversaw a few races but still turned in some stellar performances and loads of best times."
Among the four new top 10 entries was the men's 800 Free team of Danielis Kvederis, Brendan Ryan, Jamie Crawford, and Hennig Colsman who broke the program record by three and a half seconds at 6:33.24. Kvederis would join Owen Collins, Ryan Cesmat, and Hawkins Wendt on the 200 Medley team to set the 2nd fastest time in school history with a finish of 1:28.00.
The women's team also saw a pair of new entries, starting with their 200 Medley team. Samantha Cazares, Delaney Johns, Amanda Miller, and Mia David set the 4th best time and finished 4th at the Championships with a time of 1:43.99. Giselle Hollis moved into 6th in the 200 Freestyle after leading off the 200 relay with a time of 1:51.95.
In the time trials Makenna Frederiksen improved her hold on 5th in the 100 IM by 0.26 with a time of 59.37. Vlad Shustov tied for 6th in the 100 IM at 52.31. Nathan Headon-Weeks is now 2nd in the 100 IM with a time of 50.70, also putting him under the National Invitational Championships (NIC) A cut. Amanda Miller became the first women's swimmer to make an NIC qualifier in the last two years with a 24.75 finish in the 50 Butterfly.
"This is a big time meet with a lot of fast teams," Coach Dykstra added. "I am excited to watch us get better and step up to the challenge moving into the next three days."
