QUICK HITS
- Seattle U earned its second win of the season over a Power 4 opponent, taking down crosstown rival Washington, 70-66, Friday night at Climate Pledge Arena.
- The win was the second straight over the Huskies, marking the first back-to-back wins Seattle U has claimed in the all-time series that dates back to 1953.
- The win extended the Redhawks’ current win streak to five, marking the longest win streak since winning eight straight from 12-25/22-1/21/23).
- Now sitting at 10-2 on the season, the program must look back to 1966-67 to find similar success. That Seattle U team won seven straight to open the season, moved to 10-1 and 11-2 before losing for a third time.
- In Seattle U’s modern DI era, the previous best start to a season was 8-2 in 2022-23. The Redhawks went on to win their first Western Athletic Conference regular season championship and finish the year 20-12.
- In the big win over the Huskies, sophomore center Austin Maurer led the way with a career-high 19 points to go with five rebounds and three blocks. The Medford, Ore., native was 7-11 from the field and 4-4 from the free-throw line.
- Joining Maurer in double figures were Brayden Maldonado with 14 and Kunseok Yeo with 12. Houran Dan added nine points in eight minutes off the bench and Will Heimbrodt had eight.
- The gringing defensive battle left the Redhawks shooting a season low 39% from the field and 13.6% from three (3-22). But their defense anchored them as they held UW to 1-of-15 from three and 36.9% from the field while forcing 16 Husky turnovers.
- Brayden Maldonado made his first 21 free throws of the season before suffering a miss. He is currently riding a streak of 22 consecutive makes and ranks second in the WCC and 4th in the nation at 97.7% (43-44) from the stripe.
- The Redhawks have shot better than 50% from the field in five of their first 12 games and have shot over 45% in 10 of 12 contests. Their season average of 51% ranks among the best in the nation.
ABOUT THE SERIES VS UTSA
- Seattle U and UTSA have two previous meetings, both coming during the 2012-13 season as conference foes in the Western Athletic Conference.
- That year marked the first in the WAC for the Redhawks, while the Roadrunners departed the league following that season.
- The teams each won on the other’s home court during regular-season league play.
- UTSA claimed a 78-75 win in Seattle on Jan. 24, 2013 before the Redhawks returned the favor on March 2, 2013 in San Antonio, winning 53-37.
MAURER’S MAGICAL WEEK
Sophomore center Austin Maurer had a coming out party last week, twice tallying a career-high in points, while leading Seattle U to a pair of huge wins. At UC Davis on Wednesday, Maurer made the most of his first collegiate start, finishing one rebound shy of a double-double (14 points, 9 rebounds), helping lead the Redhawks to a key road win. Two nights later back home in Seattle, Maurer outmatched Big Ten Washington’s bigs, finishing with a career-high 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. He hit a crucial go-ahead bucket with a minute remaining and converted two free throws in the final seconds to help secure the program’s first ever back-to-back win over the Huskies. Seattle U has now won five straight and is 10-2 on the season for the first time since 1966-67.
