SEATTLE — After a one-year hiatus, the Seattle University cross country team is headed back to Salem, Ore., for the Charles Bowles Invitational.

The Redhawks will return to the event hosted by Willamette University on Saturday, Oct. 4, for their first race since the Cougar Classic held on Sept. 12. The men’s 8k will begin at 9:30 am, and the women’s 5k will begin at 10:20 am.

The venue in northern Oregon has been kind to Seattle U. In 2023, the women’s team finished second in the 5k, and the men’s 8k record was shattered by Yonas Sauers, who broke an 18-year old record by 15 seconds.

Records could stand to fall this Saturday, as well. Azalea Groleau – already the school’s record holder in the 6k – has a track record of success at the Charles Bowles Invitational, including the 5k time of 17:25.5 in 2023’s meet, which vaulted her into fourth-place in Seattle U’s all-time 5k hierarchy. Also in that meet, Khalid Hirsi finished second among Redhawk men with a 25:46.5 8k.

Saturday’s meet will present a new opportunity for Seattle U; the women’s team will run their first 5k race of the season, and the men’s team has the chance to improve on their 8k times from the Cougar Classic. Specifically, freshman Roman Radecki will look to further impress in the start to his collegiate career, after running an 8k of 25:40.1 to lead all Redhawk men in their first 8k of the season.

On the women’s side, freshman Mira Danish will hope that an impressive 6k debut of 23:38.4 will translate to her first collegiate 5k. Head coach Jordana LeSavage praised the efforts of the freshmen immediately following the Cougar Classic.

“I am very encouraged with what I saw from our freshmen,” LeSavage said. “This group is eager to get back to training and will maximize the next opportunity to the fullest.”
