ST GEORGE, UT - Seattle U baseball dropped their series opener with Utah Tech, 9-10, in 10 innings on Friday. After the Redhawks took a 1-run lead in the top of the 10th off a Jake Wagoner home run, the Trailblazers returned the favor with a walk-off home run to take the series opener.
"Tough one to lose as we are battling to get into the tournament," head coach Donny Harrel said following the loss. "Guys battled all day in a hot park that gives up a lot of hits and runs and to get the first two outs in the 9th and then get walked off is a heart breaker. Have to rally back tomorrow and find a way to win the series."
The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout, with both sides trading big innings. The lead changed hands six different times before the Trailblazers ended it in the 10th.
Wagoner had a career day at the plate, nearly willing the Redhawks to a win. The backstop went 4-for-5 with three RBI, and the long ball in the 10th inning. Kenny Ishikawa matched him in the hits department, also going 4-for-5, while Sam Kane was the other multi-hit Redhawk with two.
Reid Madariaga made his second start of the season on the mound, going four innings while allowing four earned. Blake Smith made a rare bullpen appearance, giving up two earned over five innings. Ishikawa (3-5) would be dinged with his fifth loss of the season after allowing the walk-off in the 10th inning.
The loss drops the Redhawks to 15-28 and 4-12 in conference play, drawing them level with Utah Tech for the final WAC tournament spot. They will look to bounce back and tie the series in game two tomorrow, May 3. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm PT with Micah Hagler scheduled to make the start.
