SAN DIEGO - Seattle U baseball dropped an extra inning thriller at San Diego State, 4-5, Thursday night. After the Redhawks forced extras with two runs in the 9th and took the lead on a Sam Kane homerun in the 10th, the Aztecs would hit a walk-off to deny SU their first win of the season.
"Tough ending with two outs and nobody on and then give up two runs for a walk-off," head coach Donny Harrel said post game. "We saturated the bases all day and it's hard leaving 16 guys on in a loss. They got the big hit when needed, and we did not capitalize on our opportunities."
Seattle U jumped out to an early lead on the night, scoring a run in the top of the 1st off an RBI single by Vicente Filiciano. The Aztecs would answer in the second with a run of their own to tie the game before taking the lead with one in the 5th and 7th.
The Redhawks would put their rally caps on in the 9th, with Tyler Peterson securing an RBI on a bases loaded HBP, followed by a Reese Harmon RBI single to center to knot the game at four.
Kane's homerun in the 10th was the first Seattle U lead since the 1st, but it would be short lived as the home side scored two in their half of the frame to walk it off. For Kane it was his 10th career homerun, moving him int0 sole possession of 10th place all-time for a career in program history.
Micah Hagler had the start on the mound, going 3.1 IP while giving up one earned run on six hits in the no-decision outing. Kenny Ishikawa and Reid Madariaga were the two called on in relief, with Ishikawa (0-1) being credited with the loss.
"Our bullpen with Madariaga and Ishikawa did a great job relieving Hagler, who came out due to his pitch count," Harrel added. "Very proud of how all three of them competed."
The loss drops Seattle U to 0-4 on the young season, and they will have a quick get back opportunity when they face top-25 opponent UC Santa Barbara tomorrow. First pitch between the Redhawks and Gauchos is scheduled for 1:00pm PT.
