MESQUITE, Nev. – A hot start helped the Seattle University Redhawks finish fifth at the Mesquite Desert Classic, with Ben Ragland and Walker Lamb finishing tied for seventh. The Redhawks shot -10 as a team in round one, tied for the second-best round of the year for Seattle U, behind only the -12 round three from the season-opening Palouse Collegiate. In all, Seattle U would finish at -5 as a team.

The Redhawks have now had four rounds double-digit strokes under par this season. The -10 round one from the Mesquite Desert Classic was matched by a -10 round one at the Palouse Collegiate and a -10 round one at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic, making it two consecutive tournaments with a round of -10 under as a team.

The Redhawks have had just seven better rounds as a team in program history, with five of those rounds coming in the last three years. Four of Seattle U's top-ten lowest rounds to par have come this season.

Ragland started the tournament with the best round of his collegiate career, a -5 under, 67. The junior would shoot even-par over the last 36 holes to finish at -5 overall, good for seventh place. He had 16 birdies in all, including six in round one and seven more in round three.

Lamb also had the best round of his career in round one, shooting a -4 under, 68. Lamb got hot with five birdies in the back nine of that round. Overall, Lamb would finish tied for seventh with Ragland, finishing at -5.

The top-ten finishes for Ragland and Lamb were their firsts of the season. Ragland's -5 under, 67 was bested by just two rounds of the 63 other golfers competing: Utah Valley's Dane Huddleston and Eastern Kentucky's Anders Larson each had -7 under, 65 rounds.

Kevin Li finished in 13th for the Redhawks with a score of -2 across 54 holes. Li's best round was -2 under, 70 in round one: he also was under par in round three, shooting a -1 under, 71. In round one, Li managed an eagle on hole six, one of 14 under-par holes for the sophomore on the tournament.

Will Koch shot +7 on the weekend. That includes rounds of +1 over, 73; +2 over, 74; and +4 over, 76. Jakov Balkovec ended at +19 overall, with his best round a +2 over, 74 in round one.

The Redhawks return to action in March with the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Oregon. That three-day competition begins March 9.
