SEATTLE – Christmas came early for Seattle University men's basketball as the Redhawks dominated in a near wire-to-wire, 79-70, win over the University of Washington Monday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.

Seattle U's last win in the series came nearly five decades ago on Nov. 28, 1978. The 40th edition of the crosstown battle will be long remembered for Redhawk fans.

The Huskies (8-4) won the tip and scored the first bucket of the night, but Seattle U quickly took charge, rolling off a 16-1 run to lead 16-3 at the 12:24 mark. UW would break a seven-minute span without a field goal just inside the 12-minute mark and piece together a 6-0 spurt.

Seattle U pushed it back to double-figures on a Paris Dawson three and, while the Huskies would narrow the gap to as few as six in the frame, the Redhawks closed out the half on an 8-1 run to take a 38-23 lead into the break.

The Husky offense continued to struggle early in the second half and Seattle U took advantage, building a game-high 22-point lead, 50-28.

A 9-0 UW run brought the home team to within nine, 54-45, with 9:27 to play. But John Christofilis would convert his second four-point play of the night, draining a three from the wing and adding the and-1 free throw, pushing the spread back to 13 at the nine-minute mark.

Seattle U would hit just two field goals for the remainder of the game, both by Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe. But the Redhawks hit 17-of-18 from the charity stripe over the span to snap a 19-game skid against the Huskies.

Moncrieffe was pure dominance, finishing with career highs in points (23) and rebounds (16) to lead the Redhawks. Christofilis added 21 points while Dawson and Houran Dan added 10 points apiece.

Making his first appearance of the season following a preseason foot injury, Kobe Williamson added a spark to the front line, finishing with four points, one rebound, one block and one assist in limited minutes.

Entering the game ranked in the nation's top 20 in free throw attempts and makes, Seattle U finished 29-of-32 to the Huskies 16-of-23.

Tyler Harris had 20 points to lead UW, including 17 in the second half. Great Osobor added 19, doing most of his damage in the first frame.

The Redhawks return to action next Monday, Dec. 30 closing out non-conference play and the calendar year at home, hosting Nicholls State. Tip off from the Redhawk Center is 7 p.m. Tickets for the game can be purchased online at goseattleu.com/tix, or by contacting the Seattle U Athletics Ticket Office at 206-398-GOSU or seattleutickets@seattleu.edu.
