BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Seattle University men's basketball could not match Western Kentucky's hot-shooting night at E.A. Dibble Arena Tuesday night, dropping an 86-73 decision to the Hilltoppers.
The home team won for the fifth straight time and collected its eighth straight home win, shooting nearly 60% from the field, including 12-of-20 from three. The Redhawks managed just 34% from the field and 8-of-33 from three as they moved to 4-7 on the season.
Maleek Arington and Paris Dawson had 17 points each to lead Seattle U, combining to go 15-of-19 from the free-throw line. Brayden Maldonado added 11 points while Malek Gomma hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds.
Don McHenry had the hot hand for the Hilltoppers, finishing with a game-high 28 points to lead four WKU players in double figures.
Western Kentucky used a 9-0 run late in the first half to open up a 36-22 advantage over the Redhawks. Despite their shooting woes, Seattle U chipped away with a 9-2 advantage to close out the frame to trail by just six, 38-32, at the break.
Early in the second, back-to-back threes by Arington and a trio of free throws from Dawson helped trim the deficit down to just two, 46-44, with 15:48 on the clock.
McHenry then broke loose for the Hilltoppers, reeling off a personal 12-0 run to push the spread up to 14, 60-46.
Seattle U would work it back down to six, 76-70, on a John Christofilis three with 4:24 remaining, but would get no closer down the stretch.
The Redhawks return to Seattle for their final three non-conference games, hosting Illinois-Chicago on Dec. 20, facing off against cross-town foe Washington on Dec. 23 and hosting Nicholls State on Dec. 30.
