CEDAR CITY, Utah - Seattle U volleyball entered Saturday's match against Southern Utah in pursuit of the season sweep of the Thunderbirds, but Southern Utah held strong on its home court, downing the Redhawks 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-17) at America First Event Center.

Sophomore Tatum Chase paced the Redhawk offense with nine kills, hitting a season best .467 on 15 attacks and two errors. It's the second time the sophomore has eclipsed a .400 clip, last meeting the mark at home against the Thunderbirds. She added a block and a dig on the defensive end.

Senior Arianna Bilby and junior Merima Smajlovic each recorded six digs, while combining for 13 digs. Freshman Grace Jones led the offense with 15 assists, one of two Redhawks with double digit assists. Redshirt sophomore Elif Teksoy added an additional 10 assists, her 16th double-digit performance of the season and sixth match in a row with double-digit assists.

Redshirt sophomore Yasemin picked up three blocks on the afternoon. She tied a season best two solo blocks in the effort and added along two kills and a dig. Senior Katlyn Sipes, after joining the 1,000 digs club, led the Redhawks with eight digs. She also racked up a team leading three aces for a new career high.

Seattle U mounted three ties and led by as many as two in the opening set. With Sipes at the service line, the Redhawks rattled off a 6-0 run to claim the lead at 14-13. Southern Utah wrestled away the run with a kill before a solo block from Elmas got the Redhawks up by two, 16-14. A 5-1 run from the Thunderbirds locked up set one for SUU 25-21.

Finding a deficit in set two, Seattle U dug deep to wrestle back to three off two SUU errors and one of Sipes' aces, but the Thunderbirds took the second set 25-20. Trailing by as many as ten in the third set, the Redhawks faced set point four times, grabbing three kills, including two from Chase to pull the set within seven, 24-17. Sipes led the run from the serve once more, but SUU took the match behind a 25-17 set victory.

On the afternoon, the Redhawks tallied 27 kills, four aces, three blocks, 26 assists and 28 digs.

Seattle U returns home next week to host California Baptist on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Redhawk Center.
