SEATTLE - An all out effort spearheaded by the Seattle U volleyball seniors secured the 3-1 (20-25, 25-10, 25-19, 25-15) win over Tarleton State on their Senior Day at the Redhawk Center.
Senior Arianna Bilby locked in her tenth double-double of the season behind a team leading 14 kills to go along with 11 digs. She also tallied two aces and four blocks, while hitting .250 on 40 attacks with four errors.
Senior Katlyn Sipes picked up 14 digs, four assists and an ace, while senior Selin Isik also secured one of the eight aces seen on the afternoon.
Junior Marley Hardgrave and redshirt sophomore Yasemin Elmas aided the Redhawk offense that tied a season high 56 kills. The pair tacked on ten kills a piece, while combining for eight blocks. Hardgrave paced the team with two solo blocks, tying her season high. Elmas hit second best on the team, posting a .412 hitting percentage on 17 attacks with three errors.
Sophomore Tanyiah Pruitt led the Redhawks in blocks, recording six for a new career high. She added seven kills, hitting .417 on 12 attacks with two errors.
Freshmen setters Anae Asuncion and Grace Jones each posted 20+ assists, with Jones leading the charge with 23. Asuncion followed right behind with 22, while securing a double-double in assists and digs, tallying 12 digs. Both were one assist shy of their season highs and each recorded two aces.
Four Redhawks registered double-digit digs on the afternoon. Junior Merima Smajlovic tied Sipes with 14 digs, while Bilby and Asuncion combined for 25.
Collectively, the Redhawks recorded 56 kills, eight aces, 11 blocks, 50 assists and 59 digs. As a unit, they hit .262 on 130 attacks with 22 errors. Defensively, they held Tarleton State to 30 kills and a .025 hitting percentage on 122 attacks with 27 errors.
Tarleton State came out in force to start off the match, locking down the Redhawk attack up front to secure the 1-0 start behind a 25-20 opening set win. Seattle U responded by hitting .462 on 26 attacks for 14 kills and two errors in set two. In both the second and third sets, the Texans hit in the negative, collecting only 10 kills with 13 errors between the two. The Redhawks conversely registered 29 kills through the second and third sets, recording 10 errors.
With a 2-1 set lead heading into the fourth, the Redhawks mimicked their second set, hitting .406 on 32 attacks for 16 kills and three errors. They ended on a 5-0 scoring run to get the series sweep of the Texans.
The Redhawks concluded the regular season with a 5-4 record at home, the most wins at home by a Redhawk team since 2018. Their six wins in conference is also the most by a team since 2017, when they grabbed seven. With the win, the Redhawks locked up the seven seed at the WAC tournament. Seattle U faces the second seeded Grand Canyon on Thursday, November 21 in Arlington, Texas.
