Redhawks Capture Sixth WAC Title

PHOENIX, AZ - Seattle U men's soccer captured their record sixth Western Athletic Conference title, defeating San Jose State, 3-0, Saturday night in Arizona. Three different players scored their first goals of the season as the Redhawks dominated the Spartans to punch their ticket to the NCAA tournament for the second straight season.

PHOENIX, AZ - Seattle U men's soccer captured their record sixth Western Athletic Conference title, defeating San Jose State, 3-0, Saturday night in Arizona. Three different players scored their first goals of the season as the Redhawks dominated the Spartans to punch their ticket to the NCAA tournament for the second straight season. 

Luke Hammond got the scoring started in the 22nd minute when he was fed a pass by Titus Washington and finished off the goal in the top-left corner. Washington, with the help of Andre Philibbosian, would then assist the second goal of the night, this time coming off the foot of Davis Mungomba. It was the first goal of the season for Hammond and the first collegiate goal for Mungomba.

Seattle U would add a third and final goal of the night in the 61st minute of the second half, when Demian Alvarez slotted home the free kick from Yeider Zuluaga. For Alvarez, the conference's Defensive Player of the Year, it was his second career Redhawk goal and the first on the 2024 campaign. 

Not lost in the goal output was the SU defense, who secured their fifth shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Charlie Lanphier was called on to make just two saves on the day as he picked up his ninth career clean sheet.

The win gives the Redhawks their sixth WAC title, the most of any men's soccer program in the conference's history. It also kept the program's perfect title match record intact, now 6-0. It also gives the Redhawks the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament, making it back-to-back appearances in the big dance for the first time in the programs modern Division I history. 

Demian Alvarez continued to rake in the senior season accolades, leading a group of six Redhawks to be named to the all-tournament team. He was also named the tournament's most outstanding player, becoming the first Seattle U player to be given the award since Noe Meza in 2021. Joining him on the all-tournament team were Luke Hammond, Charlie Lanphier, Edgar Leon, Mo Mohamed, and Titus Washington. 

Seattle U's next opponent and tournament opening round match up will be announced during the NCAA selection show on Monday, Nov. 18. The show will begin at 10am PT and will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
